Montserrat - LEDC case study tectonic hazard (Volcanic Eruption)

We need to know about what measures were taken to prepare and predict the hazard; what measures were taken both short term and long term once the hazard had occurred+evaluate the sources of aid. We shall also be looking a an MEDC earthquake and then we shall have to compare and contrast the responses and recovery both areas made and evaluate the need for aid. The MEDC earthquake study shall be Kobe 1995. A little dated perhaps but there is a lot of good material for this Earthquake!

Some decent Montserrat links - BBC Scotland has a good interactive activity - some curious spelling mistakes though!

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory website - this brings you bang (get it...) up to date with events, together with good images of what has happened in the past!

Weekly reports on this volcano can be found here - its worth searching for key dates rather than reading each entry - unless you are having trouble sleeping!

A website with links to maps and a whole host of other information can be found here!

Fancy hearing radio from Montserrat? Live link here.

LEDC case study - Cyclone one bravo Bangladesh 1999

MEDC Tropical Storm - Hurricane Floyd

Hurricane Floyd hit the East Coast of the United States of America in 1999. There is a lot of information about this storm. Wikipedia is a good starting point.
NASA have some good images of the storm.
The Earth Observatory has a wordy but good account of the impacts of the storm.
There is plenty of good information, links and a video showing Floyd here

The US newspaper USA Today have a lot of information which you can find here

Managing Hazards - Tropical Storms

You need to know a little about tropical storms - where they occur, conditions needed to create them and where they hit. In lesson you put together a map of tropical storms - the picture above shows what they are called in different world regions.

Tropical storms are also known as:

Hurricanes North Atlantic
Typhoons Pacific
Tropical Cyclones South East Asia
Willy-Willies Australia

Conditions required for formation:

Over Oceans
Ocean temperature over 27°c
Water heated to a depth of several metres
Close to the East Coast of continents
Late summer or early Autumn, when sea temperatures are at their highest.

We are going to look at two case studies (MEDC and LEDC and then compare them. The LEDC case study is Cyclone One Bravo, Bangladesh, May 1997; the MEDC case study is MEDC Storm Hurricane Floyd. Future posts will help with information about these!
