Case Study videos - The Inca Trail To Machu Picchu - an LEDC case study requiring sustainable management

One video shows the site in some detail, the other is a video of the Inca Trail that leads to Machu Picchu. Both will give you a much better understanding of what is there, from here you should hopefully start to appreciate why it is a valuable human tourist attraction and why it ought to be managed so that people can still enjoy it in the future"

Are we ok?

Check the planet is still in one piece here and make sure that mad scientists haven't swallowed us all up into a black hole...

I do like this picture - pretty and so much GEOGRAPHY!!!

Doncaster - a joy to behold according to a member of year 10 (who shall remain anonymous...)

Ahhh, the Frenchgate retail area of Doncaster. One of our students in year 10 was less than impressed with the retail facilities of Lincoln so to try and cheer him up, here are a couple of images taken from www.fawleywastonbooth.com of the Frenchgate area. I hope this helps you deal with the trauma that was Lincoln!

Also included is a lovely shot of days gone by in Doncaster. Enough of Doncaster for now (but no promises that we shall not have another fascinating mini tour of the town in the future...!)

Planning your work!

Planning your work is many things. Useful, productive if done well and quite boring to do are just some of my initial thoughts.

However it is something that I highly recommend, especially with coursework. I suggest that you plan your time and set deadlines to achieve parts of your work with a view to having it all completed by the 16th/17th December (when you have your final Geography lesson of 2008!)

So, how might you do this?
- Have your introduction completed for next lesson (14th/15th October.)
- Have your data collection grid completed for the week after (21st/22nd October.)
- Have all your data analysed (e.g. calculate the distance from Lincoln that the car tax disks were issued using a route planner such as the AA's or Google's
- Answer each hypothesis you chose in turn, making sure that you include graphs of the data collected and relevant maps as you write about the information you collected.
- Conclude the survey and answer the key question. Is there a difference in the distance travelled to get to Lincoln between those in the Bailgate area and those in the city centre? If so, what reasons have you got for the differences. If not, can you justify why you found no real difference?
- Write a limitations section to your coursework. In this include things that you perhaps would need more information about, or things which if you were to do this work again from the start you would choose to do differently.
- Keep a bibliography of websites/books you used to get information. Record the date you accessed the information in case the website changes in the future and it becomes unavailable

e.g. http://maps.google.co.uk accessed on 07/10/08
http://www.bbc.co.uk accessed on 07/10/08

Finally make sure that you have a contents page with page numbers on it that link to the main chapters of your work YES, this means you need page numbers on your work and that it is meant to follow a logical order.

Seals and penguins...

Here is a "timewaster" but one I find interesting. It is from an island close to the Falkland Islands. It is about the same distance from the South Pole as people in Northern England are to the North Pole. There are several differences though. From now on there may well be several interesting wildlife sightings. Plenty of seals as I write this!

Useful software...

Long time no post. By request of one of my students, here is the link to download free software that is similar in design to Microsoft Office.

http://download.openoffice.org/

I have never used this software - however reviews and reports claim that it is stable, easy to use etc. A google search should locate reviews. I cannot verify any claims made about the software!!!
